through the Meon Valley. The villages of the Meon valley provide beautiful examples of downland hamlets. The long association with their rural past and historic buildings make them wonderful places to wander round. East Meon is a particularly good example. It was the home of Izaac Walton, author of the book about fishing,”The Compleat Angler”, and the village pub still bears his name. Through the centre of the village runs the River Meon, with flint buildings on either side. The church, at the base of the hill, is one of the finest Norman churches in Hampshire. 3.

Petersfield. Petersfield is an old market town which is both
peaceful and attractive. It boasts its own boating lake, which for many years,
has attracted people from out of the town. It has superb views of Butser Hill
and the South Downs as well as being surrounded by some great countryside and
villages such as South Harting and Buriton. The town centre has had a major
facelift over the last 15 years and with the development of Rams Walk, it is now
a thriving shopping area. As well as a good selection of shops, the town also
hosts a twice weekly market. 5.

Petersfield. 6. Arrive Midhurst Midhurst is a delightful country town, with good pubs
and interesting shops, including many selling antiques. The area around the
church is especially attractive. Red Lion Street is lined with half-timbered and
Georgian buildings. The 16th century timbered market hall stands in
front of the Spread Eagle hotel, which goes back to 1430. Cowdray Park, east of
the town, was formerly the grounds of Cowdray House, built in the early 16th
century and destroyed by fire in 1793. The ruins, notably the tall gatehouse,
show how impressive the original must have been. The park is a pleasant place
for picnics and walks, and is also one of Britains top polo grounds. 7.
